New tie rod clamp assemblies are being used in the link assemblies that are part of the new steering linkage groups.

NOTE: Reuse of the bolts and self-locking nuts is NOT recommended should the joint be loosened or disturbed. Replacement of the clamp assembly is recommended if the socket assemblies or link rod requires replacement.

NOTE: When installing new tie rod components during truck assembly, or when adjusting the tie rods to obtain the correct steering geometry, be sure to locate the clamp assembly before the bolt and nut are tightened. Failure to locate the clamp correctly on the tie rod could shorten the service life of the tie rod assembly.

Use the following steps to correctly locate the clamp assembly on the tie rods.

1. Obtain the correct clamp assembly and link assembly as shown in the chart.

Illustration 1. Dimension for location the clamp assembly on either end of the tie rod. (A) 6.3 mm (.25 in).

2. Position the clamp assembly a maximum of 6.3 mm (.25 in) from the ends of the tie rod. See Illustration 1.

3. Align the open portion of the clamp assembly with one of the slots in the end of the tie rod as shown in Illustration 2.

Illustration 2. Open portion of the clamp assembly (1) aligned with one of the slots in the tie rod (2).

4. Tighten the clamp assembly bolts on the 768C, 772B Tractors, 769C, 773B Trucks and 771C, 775B Quarry Trucks to 185 N·m (135 lb ft). Tighten the clamp assembly bolts on the 776B, 776C Tractors and 777B, 777C Trucks to 285 N·m (210 lb ft).
