There has been some confusion concerning driveshaft lubrication. The new driveshafts announced in the reference material do not require lubrication. Use the following information to determine the type of driveshaft on the machine and if the driveshaft requires periodic lubrication.
Illustration 1. New driveshafts announced in the reference material. (1) Lip-type seal. (2) Plastic coating.
The new driveshaft has a lip-type seal instead of the felt washer and does not have a removable cap. The spline shaft has a plastic coating and is about the same size as the outside diameter of the driveshaft.
Although the new driveshafts do not have grease fittings and do not require lubrication, continue to grease the universal joint spiders as outlined in the Operation And Maintenance Manuals.
Illustration 2. Former driveshaft. (3) Grease Fitting. (4) Cap. (5) Felt Washer
The former driveshaft needs periodic lubrication as outlined in the Operation And Maintenance Manuals. The former driveshafts can be identified by the grease fitting on the driveshaft and the removable cap. The spline shaft of the former driveshaft has a felt washer for a seal and is smaller than the outside diameter of the driveshaft.
