Seals Can Be Added To Suspension Cylinder Bearings{7213}

Usage:

D350C ( 8XC1-Up ) and D400 ( 1MD1-Up ) Trucks

Seals can be added to the lower bearings on the rear suspension cylinders of the above machines. The seals keep water and dirt out and prolong the service life of the bearings in some applications. The seals are manufactured from a solid, resilient material to allow for movement between the suspension cylinders and the suspension A-frame.

The location of the parts is shown in Illustrations 1 and 2.

Illustration 1. Location of seals.

Illustration 2. Cross section of seals. Refer to the chart for item description.

Some machines will require modification to the cylinder mounting points on the suspension A-frames in order to accommodate the seals. This modification involves the addition of fabricated flanges which hold the top portion of the seal in contact with the bearing.

Illustration 3 shows the type of cylinder mounting which will require this modification.

Illustration 3. Cylinder mounting that requires fabricated flanges (shown in Illustration 5).

If the modification is required, proceed as follows:

1. Fabricate eight flanges to the dimensions given in Illustration 4. Use 10.0 mm (.40") steel plate with a minimum tensile strength of 490 MPa (70,500 psi) and a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa (51,500 psi).

2. Fully lower the trailer suspension. Support the trailer frame and the suspension A-frames and remove the trailer wheels.

3. Remove the suspension cylinder pins and raise the trailer frame until the suspension cylinders are fully free of the mounting bosses.

4. Tack weld the fabricated flanges in position (Illustration 5) ensuring that they are flush with the inside faces of the cylinder mounting bosses.

Illustration 5. Locations of tack welds.

5. Fully weld the flanges in position using AWS E7018 electrodes or equivalent. Blend the weld smoothly into the cylinder bosses at position (A) and grind the profile smooth. Do not weld the flanges on the inside edges at position (B).

6. Clean and paint the welded areas. Install the bearing seals as shown in Illustration 2.
