Problem

Some axle mounting surfaces on CP433C Compactor axles may not be flat causing undue stress on the mounting bolts, resulting in the bolts coming loose and breaking.

Parts Needed

Dealers will need to order parts for this Program.

8 - 8T4123 WASHER
4 - 7X2568 BOLT
4 - 7Y1537 NUT

Action Required

Inspect axle mounting bolts for gaps between mounting surfaces and check the torque to verify that the bolts have not loosened. If either condition is found, remove axle, rework mounting pads, and reinstall axle in machine.

See the attached procedure.

Owner Notification

U.S. and Canadian owners will receive the attached Owner Notification.

Service Claim Allowances

NOTE: This is a .5-hour job to inspect and replace the nuts. If the complete rework procedure needs to be completed, and additional 1.5 hours labor will be allowed

Rework Procedure

PARTS NEEDED TO PERFORM THIS REWORK:

If reworking of the axle mounting surfaces is required, replacing the mounting bolts is also required:

CP433C DRIVE AXLE / MOUNTING BOLT REWORK PROCEDURE

The following procedure is to inspect and rework if necessary, the drive axle mounting pads and hardware on some CP433C machines. This rework is necessary to eliminate any gap between the machine frame and axle mounting pads, reducing any undue stress on the axle mounting bolts.

NOTE: Rework can be performed in the field if a crane truck with 8,000 lb capacity is available to lift up the rear of the machine.

1. Visually inspect the machine to see if a gap exists between the frame and axle mounting pads. If a gap exists, measure with a feeler gauge from the back and front of the pads toward the center line of the bolt, also, check the static torque on the axle mounting bolts. The static torque should check at 295 ft-lbs. If the gap measures in excess of .5mm or the static torque checks below 295 ft-lbs and the axle mounting surface does not appear to be flat, continue with the following rework procedure.

If the axle mount surfaces appear to be flat and in even contact with the frame mounting surfaces across the entire mating surface area, and the static torque checks above 295 ft-lbs, disregard steps 2 through 6 and proceed to STEP 7.

NOTE: STATIC INSPECTION TORQUE: THE SPECIFIED TORQUE, MEASURED AFTER FASTENER TIGHTENING, THAT THE FASTENER MUST WITHSTAND WITHOUT MOVEMENT IN THE TIGHTENING DIRECTION.

2. With the machine parked on level ground, disconnect the three hydraulic hoses from the propel motor. Plug the hoses and the motor fittings to avoid hydraulic oil leaks and contamination of the components.

3. Remove the axle mounting bolts, lift the rear of the machine and roll the axle out toward the back of the machine by using the tires to guide it out. Support the machine appropriately.

NOTE: The crane used to lift the rear of the machine should have a lifting capacity of at least 8,000 lbs.

4. Use a straight edge to determine where the high points are on the axle mounting pad surfaces and grind them flat using a suitable grinder. Check again using a straight edge to determine if the flatness of the pads are within approximately.5 mm.

5. Remove any paint, rust etc. that may be present on the machines frame mounting surfaces and make sure they are flat.

6. The axle should now be installed back into the machine. With the frame supported securely, roll the axle under the frame using the tires to guide it in. Align the axle with the frame and install the hardware being sure to use new mounting bolts with self locking nuts listed below. Connect the three hydraulic hoses to the propel motor.

7. With the new self locking nuts p/n 7Y-1537 installed on the axle mounting bolts, tighten all four axle mounting bolts to approximately 150ft-lbs.

8. Torque all four axle mounting bolts to 385 ft-lbs.
