The bolts that retain the belt drive wheels to the wheel hub can loosen in service. The former drive wheel backup ring segment material is too soft. The ring segments and washers need to be replaced, and the bolts retorqued. The bolts that retain the axle shaft to the wheel hub can also loosen in service. They need to be retorqued.

- (1-Rework Procedure)
Rework Procedure
1) Position the tractor on a smooth level surface such that one of the three 8R-9379 Drivewheel Backup Ring Segments on the right hand side of the tractor is in the forward position (to minimize loading due to belt tension). Shut down tractor. Apply parking brake.
2) Remove the (6) 1D-4628 Bolts and (6) 5P-8249 Washers retaining the 8R-9379 Ring Segment. Retain the bolts. Discard the washers and ring. (Refer to Illustration 1.)
3) Make sure the mating surface of the drive wheel and both sides of a new 159-1229 Drivewheel Backup Ring Segment are clean. Install the Ring Segment using the (6) retained 1D-4628 Bolts and (6) new 5P-8249 Washers.
4) Tighten each of the bolts to 325 ± 40 N·m (240 ± 30 lb-ft). Then turn each an additional 60 ± 5°.
5) Repeat Steps 1-4 for a second 8R-9379 Ring Segment.
6) Repeat Steps 1-4 for the remaining 8R-9379 Ring Segment.
7) Slightly loosen two diametrically opposite 1D-4625 Bolts that retain the axle shaft to the wheel hub. Maintain approximately 205 N·m (150 ft-lb) torque to prevent breaking the liquid gasket seal. (Refer to Illustration 1.)
8) Retighten the bolts to 325 ± 40 N·m (240 ± 30 lb-ft). Turn an additional 60 ± 5°.
9) Continue the retightening process in a similar manner moving around the axle shaft until all twelve bolts have been retorqued.
10) Repeat Steps 1-9 for the left hand drive wheel hub.
11) Touch up paint as required using 4C-4198 Caterpillar Black Medium Gloss aerosol paint.
