Use 6V100 Tool Arrangement To Remove And Install Piston Pin Bearings For Both Tapered And Standard Connecting Rods

Usage:

All Current Caterpillar Connecting Rods

Piston pin bearings can now be installed and removed easier and faster with the use of the 6V100 Tool Arrangement. This arrangement is made up of separate tool groups that are used according to engine or machine model and the type of connecting rod that is installed. With the 6V100 Tool Arrangement, an old piston pin bearing can be removed and a new bearing installed all in one operation. The information that follows gives an explanation of the separate tool groups found in the new 6V100 Tool Arrangement.

5P8639 Press Group

The 5P8639 Press Group is the basic unit to start with. Separate tool groups are used with the 5P8639 Press Group to remove and install piston pin bearings according to the type of connecting rod that is used and the engine or machine model. Either an electrically or hand operated hydraulic pump can be used with the press group. With the correct tool group, the 5P8639 Press Group removes the old bearing and installs the new bearing all in one movement of the press. This permits easier and faster installation and removal of piston pin bearings for both standard and taper type connecting rods. Illustration 1 shows the separate parts of the 5P8639 Press Group. Only those parts shown with part numbers are available for parts service.

5P8655 Tool Group (Standard Connecting Rods)

The 5P8655 Tool Group can be used with the 5P8639 Press Group to remove and install piston pin bearings for standard type connecting rods. Illustration 2 and the chart that follows shows the separate parts of the 5P8655 Tool Group.

5P8644, 5P8648, 5P8652 Tool Groups (Taper Type Connecting Rods)

The 5P8644, 5P8648 and 5P8652 Tool Groups can be used with the 5P8639 Press Group to remove and install piston pin bearings for taper type connecting rods according to engine or machine model. Illustration 3 shows typical examples of the separate parts in these tool groups. The chart that follows gives the correct part numbers of the separate parts and the correct use of each tool group.

Extra Tools Needed

Use the chart that follows for the extra tools needed for use with all the tool groups.

Special Instruction Form No. SMHS7295, "Use of Piston Pin Bearing Removal and Installation Tools", gives the procedures to assemble the 5P8639 Press Group and to remove and install piston pin bearings from both taper and standard type connecting rods. It also gives a list of the models, engine and machine, the new tool groups can be used on to remove and install piston pin bearings.
