The above article outlines the steps necessary to keep water and dirt out of the transmission manual switch of the above machines. By fabricating a protective plate for the bottom of the shift console, and covering the console during cleaning, many switch failures can be prevented.
Many times the failure of other components is blamed on the 9D8587 Manual Switch. Wear or misalignment of the pinion, bearing or gear can give a false indication of a faulty switch. These three components should be checked before a manual switch replacement is made. See the illustration.
These tips should improve the service life of the manual switch and reduce unnecessary replacements.
