Identification Of Track Motor Universal Joint Assemblies{3251,3201,5058}

Usage:

943, 953, 963, 973 Loaders;
225, 235, 245 Excavators;
227 Loggers

There have been reports of problems in the field with identification of universal joint assemblies used in the hydrostatic track motors of the above machines. Several different universal joint assemblies use the same 4T903 Center Link (see Illustration 1) but use different end yokes. The component parts of the universal joint assemblies are not serviced separately, and only the center link is stamped with a part number. Also, the 4T1693 Universal Joint Assembly, which is canceled, is similar in appearance but does not use the 4T903 Center Link.

Illustration 1. 4T903 Center Link.

A visual inspection can help to avoid confusion among the various universal joint assemblies. The earlier 4T905 and 4T1693 Universal Joint Assemblies can be distinguished from the later 4T7480 and 4T8689 Universal Joint Assemblies by the appearance of the end of the barrel end yoke, see Illustration 2. Also, the 4T905 and 4T7480 Universal Joint Assemblies have a small hole drilled through the output end yoke (see Illustration 3). The 4T1693 and 4T8689 Universal Joint Assemblies do not have a hole drilled in the output end yoke.

Illustration 2. Comparison of the universal joint assembly barrel end yokes.

The 4T8689 Universal Joint Assembly is adaptable to and can be used as the parts service replacement, for all universal joint assemblies on the above machines.
