Reference: Service Magazine, January 11, 1982, Page 6. The article "Procedure Reduces Possibility Of Spraying Hot Hydraulic Oil When S.O.S. Sample Is Taken," tells about a new procedure which will decrease the possibility of oil spraying when an S.O.S. sample is taken.
Even with the new procedure, oil at times can escape when an oil sample is taken. An alternate (different) method that will prevent leakage can now be used. This method uses a 1/8" NPT mini-gauge plug and the Probalyzer I sampler. These tools can be installed into any engine or transmission system where the pressure is less than 27 500 kPa (4000 psi). To use the new tools in the hydraulic system, connect the mini-gauge plug to the 6V4143 Adapter. The adapter can then be connected to an existing 6V3965 Nipple in the system. During operation of the machine, do not leave the mini-gauge plug connected to the hydraulic system. The pressures in the hydraulic system can cause leakage past the seals in the plug after a period of time.
The mini-plug can be connected to a 6V4143 Quick Disconnect Adapter. The 6V4143 Adapter can then be connected to the 6V3965 Nipple. 6V3965 Nipples are currently installed in transmission and hydraulic oil systems on most new machines.
The Probalyzer I, which consists of a sample needle, a flexible plastic neck, and cap, can be installed on a standard oil sample bottle. The Probalyzer I is put into the mini-plug to take an oil sample.
It is recommended that two oil sample bottles be used when a sample is taken. The first bottle is filled to flush the fitting. The second bottle is used for the oil sample.
