There have been reports of Caterpillar Spark-Ignited Engine failures caused by combustion chamber deposits that formed while using lubricating oil that contained too much sulfated ash. There is evidence to suggest that low emission (lean burn) engines are more susceptible to the effects of ash than stoichiometric engines. Be sure to use the correct lubricating oil in Caterpillar Spark Ignited Engine. The reference article and reference contain recommendations for selecting the correct lubricating oil.
