New Power Pad Housings With Needle Bearings Used In Fuel Injection Control Groups

Usage:

3600 Family Of Engines

Description of Change: New power pad housing assemblies are used in the fuel injection control groups on the 3600 Family of Engines. The new housings have needle bearings in place of the sleeve bearings used in the former housing. The needle bearings will help reduce wear and excessive linkage movement that could occur with the sleeve bearings. A new shaft and lever are also used with the new power pad housing assemblies.

Adaptable As: The new components in the fuel injection control groups used on 3606 and 3608 Engines are listed in Chart A. The new components in the fuel injection control groups used on 3612 and 3616 Engines are listed in Chart B. Illustration 1 shows the typical location of the new components. The new components are in effect with 3606 Engines 8RS326-Up, 3608 Engines 6MC261-Up, 3612 Engines 9RC26-Up, and 3616 Engines 1PD24-Up. The new components are adaptable to all earlier 3600 Family of Engines. When the new components are installed, use the procedure that follows to adjust fuel control linkage.

Procedure To Adjust Fuel Control Linkage

1. Loosen the locknuts and adjust governor control rod (3) to its minimum length.

2. Remove synchronizing pin (1) from storage hole location on the power pad housing. Remove plug (2) and install pin (1) without washers in the hole where plug (2) was removed.

3. Rotate fuel stop lever (4) until it contacts synchronizing pin (1).

NOTE: Fuel stop lever (4) must remain in contact with synchronizing pin (1) during the linkage adjustment.

4. Install synchronizing gauge, part of 6V6170 Timing and Fuel Setting Group, between the step on the fuel rack and the adjustment screw on the unit injector.

5. Turn the adjusting screw on top of spring-loaded rod (5) as necessary until there is a slight drag on the synchronizing gauge as the gauge is moved out of position on the fuel rack.

6. Repeat Step 5 for each unit injector fuel rack to be certain they are all synchronized at the mid point of control linkage travel.

7. Remove the plug and install dial indicator (6), part of 6V6170 Timing and Fuel Setting Group, in the power pad housing as shown (dial indicator must be installed as far in as possible). Set the dial indicator probe against fuel stop lever (4) and record the position of the dial indicator. Remove synchronizing pin (1) and put it in the storage location. Install plug (2) in the hole where the pin was removed.

8. Move the governor to the full shutoff position.

9. Adjust governor control rod (3) until dial indicator (6) moves -9.3 mm (-.37"). Tighten the two locknuts on rod (3). The total available travel of the dial indicator is approximately 9.4 mm (.37"), therefore the "zero" cannot be used.

10. Remove indicator (6) from the power pad housing and install the plug in the hole where the indicator was removed.

11. Check and adjust the Power Setting as per the information plate on the side of the engine. See Fuel Setting Check in the appropriate Service Manual.

NOTE: If the deadband is reduced beyond the specification, engine overspeed can occur whenever the engine is operated at high rpm without load. This is because it requires less rack to operate the engine at high rpm than low rpm. Provide necessary shutdown equipment and procedures to shut down the engine in case of overspeed during the overspeed test.

12. Before starting the engine, make a mark (A) on the 3161 Governor housing, relative to shaft (7), as shown to indicate the position of minimum governor travel. Start the engine and operate at low idle. When the engine is started, shaft (7) will rotate to another position. Mark the position (B), relative to shaft (7), as shown. The running position, (B), must be six degrees or more above position (A). Runaway could occur if the engine is operated at high rpm without load.

13. Operate the engine up to the overspeed shutdown point to ensure that the governor deadband is sufficient to shutoff the engine at high rpm.

14. Reset the governor smoke limiter level to a negative (-) 2.0 mm (-.08").
