NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Start By:

  1. Remove the crankshaft rear seal.

  2. Remove the electric starting motor.

  3. Remove the oil pump.

  4. Remove fuel filter base.

  5. Remove fuel filter and water separator base.

  6. Remove fuel priming pump.


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


Note: Inspect all O-rings, seals, and gaskets for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

  1. Place engine on suitable cribbing.

  2. Disconnect mounting hardware (1), and nut (3). Set wiring harness (2) out of the way.

  3. Use two people to remove circuit breaker panel/bracket assembly (5). Circuit breaker panel/bracket assembly (5) weigh approximately 26 kg (57 lb).

  4. Remove four bolts (4) and circuit breaker panel/bracket assembly (5). One bolt (4) is not shown.

  5. Remove all cable straps (6) and speed sensor assembly (7).

  6. Disconnect wiring harness (8) and position out of the way.

  7. Remove all mounting hardware (9).

  8. Remove hose assembly (11).

  9. Remove two bolts (10), two bolts (13), and hose assemblies (12).

  10. Remove four bolts (14).

  11. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the flywheel housing (18). The flywheel housing (18) weighs approximately 125 kg (276 lb).

  12. Remove 20 bolts (15), two bolts (16), and eight bolts (17).

  13. Remove flywheel housing (18).

Note: Inspect all O-rings, seals, and gaskets for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.

  1. Install the flywheel cover (18) in the reverse order of removal.

  2. Tighten the bolts as follows:

    1. In numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 1 through Bolt 2 to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

    2. In numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 3 through Bolt 10 to a torque of 135 ± 20 N·m (100 ± 15 lb ft).

    3. In numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 11 through Bolt 36 to a torque of 47 ± 9 N·m (35 ± 7 lb ft)

End By:

  1. Install the crankshaft rear seal.

  2. Install the electric starting motor.

  3. Install the oil pump.

  4. Install fuel filter base.

  5. Install fuel filter and water separator base.

  6. Install fuel priming pump.
