Oil Filter Inspection Can Save Additional Internal Engine Damage

Usage:

Description of Change: Inspection of the used oil filter during the oil filter change can reveal foreign debris and bearing material. Personnel performing maintenance should be informed that the used filter should be cut open before installing the new filter; and, if debris is found, the engine should not be restarted until the cause of the debris is corrected.

In some cases, crankshafts, oil coolers and cylinder blocks have been saved because maintenance personnel would keep the unit shut down and correct the cause of the debris. This action would then reduce the overall owning and operating cost of the engine.

The 6V7905 Filter Cutter is available to aid in the filter inspection.

Use a 6V7905 Filter Cutter to cut the filter housing.

Cut the paper filter element.

Inspect paper filter element for debris.
