Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Reports have been received there are multiple failures on radiator 115-1783 Fan Spider As. During a typical failure, a generator set has stopped or a noise has been reported. Upon inspection, the radiator spider fan has been determined to be broken, cracked, and collapsed. In some cases, contingent damage to the drive system and radiator has been reported. Problem appears to be a petroleum application issue with 86% of the claims.

Solution

------ WARNING! ------

Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.

Inspect 115-1783 Fan Spider As for cracking. If a crack is found, replace with 128-5631 Blower Fan As.

128-5631 Blower Fan As will require approximately 50 more engine HP than 115-1783 Fan Spider As unless the fan speed is reduced. Therefore, adherence to proper belt tensioning procedures and maintenance intervals will be required. When a fan is replaced, new belts are required. Maintain the belt tension according to the Specifications manual or according to 7N-9693 Tension Chart. Use 144-0235 Belt Tension Gauge.

Note: To achieve the same cooling capability and engine power requirements for 1500 rpm / 50 Hz applications using 7W-5223 Fan Drive Pulley Gp, or 380-5143 Fan Drive Pulley Gp, replace the pulleys, and belts within these groups with 229-7306 Crankshaft Pulley, 7W-6470 Fan Drive Pulley and 1N-3713 V-Belt Set. This change will reduce the air flow/power requirements of 128-5631 Blower Fan As to match the air flow/power requirements of 115-1783 Fan Spider As.
