Interfaces

The digital display will communicate over the J1939 protocol. The display is programmed according to J1939 as defined by SAE and Caterpillar Inc. Button controls are defined below.

Home Screen

Once the Dosing Cabinet Display is started up, the home screen will appear. The default screen format is the 4Up display, however the format is changed, the display will resume the last know format on the next power-up.

The user will be able to scroll through various aftertreatment parameters using the RIGHT and LEFT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) and will also allow the user to access the main menu by pressing the LIST button (button 2).

Note: Pressing the LIST button (button 2) at any time will work as a “back” feature and bring you back to the previous screen.

4UP and 1UP

Suspect Parameter Number (SPN)

The Dosing Cabinet will detect the J1939 parameters being broadcasted by the ECU and populate the display parameters according to the detected parameters. The Dosing Cabinet will scan the J1939 network for 2 minutes after start-up. During the first two minutes only two 4 UP screens will be accessible to the user. After the scanning period has ended, the number of available screens will be altered based on the number of parameters detected by the active SPN array feature. Display screens will be populated in the order that parameters are detected with the following exception:

  • For both 1UP and the 4UP screens, the first eight parameters should consist of the ones seen in the table below. If any of these parameters are not detected, the spot where this parameter was located should be replaced with the next available detected parameter from the below table.

  • Table 1 lists all available parameters on the data link. Only the ones marked with an X are available on the 1Up and 4Up display features.

The 1UP and 4UP will accommodate the varying number of parameters by changing the number of screens displayed. The 1UP will allow the operator to cycle through all detected parameters one at a time in a loop. The 4UP will create a varying number of screens at start-up when parameters are detected. The number of screens created will be the minimum required to show all detected parameters (excluding Dosing Information parameters). If the number of detected parameters is not evenly divisible by four, then the last 4UP display screen created will have unused spaces that are left blank. Life and Trip parameters are not affected by the active SPN array. These parameters will be programmed into the Dosing Cabinet Display. A complete list of SPNs that will be supported by the Dosing Cabinet Display.

SPN/FMI Diagnostic Arrays

The SPN and FMI list will be separated for storage in the Dosing Cabinet Display. When an error is received, the display will collect the SPN and FMI separately and combine the text strings to be displayed to the operator. This action will give the display more memory efficient way of storing errors and their respective text strings. All required SPN/FMI can be found below.

Main Menu

The main menu lets the user see information about the system and customize the display settings. Once the display is powered on, press the LIST button (button 2) to display the main menu.

Use the LEFT ARROW button and the RIGHT ARROW button (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu.

Use the ENTER button (button 5) to move to the following screens that correspond to each category.

To exit the main menu, press the LIST button (button 2).

Dosing System Information

The dosing system information screen allows the user to view information regarding the dosing system.

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector triangle is in the “Dosing System Information” category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to go to the "Dosing System Information" screen.

  • To toggle the AFT System (Disable/Enable), then press the Enter button.

  • To exit, push the LIST button (button 2).

Display Settings

The display Settings menu allows the user to adjust the following settings:

  • Brightness

  • Contrast

  • Gauge Display

  • Custom 4Up Display

  • Reset 4 Up Display

To navigate to the Display Settings menu, the user must:

  • From the home screen, press the LIST button (button 2).

  • Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Display Settings" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Display Settings" Menu

Brightness

There are two ways to adjust the brightness of the screen on the MGCPI.

  • Using the brightness control buttons (from any screen).

  • In the brightness control menu.

Note: Factory default value is 90%.

Using the display controls from any screen:

  • The brightness can be adjusted at any time and on any screen by pressing the UP or DOWN buttons (button 1).

  • The first press of button 1 will activate the brightness control (seen in the bottom left of the display).

  • Each additional press of button 1 will Increase or decrease the brightness by 5%.

Note: Any changes to brightness using button 1 will NOT be saved if the Dosing Cabinet is turned off.

In the brightness control menu:

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Display Settings" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Display Settings" Menu

  • From the Display Settings screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Brightness" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5).

  • To adjust brightness, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4).

  • Each press of either the LEFT or RIGHT arrow button will increase or decrease the brightness by 5%.

  • Once the desired brightness is reached, press the ENTER button (button 5) to save the setting, then the exit button to return to the main menu screen.

Note: Changes made using the Display Menu method will be saved if the Dosing Cabinet is turned off.

Contrast

There are two ways to adjust the contrast of the screen on the MGCP I.

1. Using the contrast control buttons (from any screen).

2. In the contrast control menu.

Note: Factory default value is 90%.

Using the contrast controls from any screen:

  • The contrast can be adjusted at any time and on any screen by pressing the UP or DOWN buttons (button 6).

  • The first press of button 6 will activate the contrast control (seen in the bottom right of the display).

  • Each additional press of button 6 will increase or decrease the contrast by 3%.

  • Once the desired contrast is reached, press the ENTER button (button 5) to save the setting, then the exit button to return to the main menu screen.

Note: Changes made using the Display Menu method will be saved if the Dosing Cabinet is turned off.

Gauge Display Menu Screens

To change the currently set display view, follow these steps:

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Display Settings" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Display Settings" Menu

  • From the Display Settings screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Gauge Display" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) - Will change the display from a "4Up" to a "1Up" (or the opposite way).

  • To exit the main menu, press the LIST button (button 2).

Custom 4UP Display

The Custom 4UP Display feature allows the user to customize the organization of the aftertreatment parameters on the 4 Up display.

Note: There can be up to TWO total custom 4up screens (8 total parameters).

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Display Settings" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Display Settings" Menu.

  • From the Display Settings screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Custom 4Up Display" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5).

  • From this screen, use the UP and DOWN button (button 1) to move the selector triangle through each one of the four displayed aftertreatment parameters.

  • Use the UP and DOWN buttons (button 6) to cycle through the different options of possible aftertreatment parameters that can be displayed.

  • Use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to see the next 4 aftertreatment parameters to customize.

  • Press the LIST button (button 2) to save your changes and return to the 4Up setup menu.

Reset 4UP Display

The Reset 4UP Display feature allows the user to reset the organization of the aftertreatment parameters on the 4 Up display back to factory settings.

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Display Settings" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Display Settings" Menu

  • From the Display Settings screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Reset 4Up Display" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5).

Units

The Units of the displayed parameters can be changed to either US or Metric (kPa).

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector triangle is in the "Units" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) – Will toggle between "US" and "Metric" units options.

Logged Diagnostics

The purpose of this function is to provide a list of logged diagnostic for J1939 errors. Logged diagnostics will be accessible through the main menu for viewing after they have been acknowledged.

Note: Only diagnostics from the Aftertreatment ECM (SA 0x91 hexadecimal) will cause an alarm on the display, however if a diagnostic from the engine ECM (SA 0x0 hexadecimal) has been detected. The code will also be populated after an Aftertreatment diagnostic has triggered an alarm. Diagnostics from both source addresses will display in the "Logged Diagnostics" screen.

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Logged Diagnostics" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5).

Logged Diagnostic Menu Screens

When accessing the logged diagnostics from the main menu, the display controls have the following functionality:

  • The LIST button (button 2) hides the active diagnostic screen and brings back up the main menu.

  • The LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons can be used to cycle through any active diagnostic messages after the currently displayed diagnostic message is acknowledged.

  • The ENTER button (button 5) retrieves all diagnostic data from the ECU. Data then becomes available to the user and can be viewed using LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons.

Service Reminders

The service reminder feature on the dosing display allows the user to set aftertreatment hour intervals to remind the user that a service is due.

  • From the main menu screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is in the "Service Reminders" category.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to enter the "Service Reminders" Menu.

Service Reminders

  • From the service reminders screen, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to either select the service reminder interval feature or the service reminder reset feature.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to be taken into the desired menu.

  • For both menus, use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow buttons (buttons 3 and 4) to scroll through the menu until the selector is on the desired service reminder.

  • Press the ENTER button (button 5) to either be taken into the "change interval" menu, or to reset the desired service reminder interval.

  • Follow the confirmation screen prompts to continue.

The above flow chart shows how the user can navigate the service reminder screen. The service reminders can be changed or reset at any time. Service reminders are to be defaulted with an interval of 0 and remaining column set to 0. If a reminder interval is set to 0H, then the reminder should be inactive. The service reminders options will be accessible from the main menu. When a reminder is triggered, the maintenance indicator will appear in the top banner (no alarm or indicator LEDs will be activated). Once the service reminder has been reset, the maintenance indicator will disappear.

Language

This display is only available in English.

Software Version

Software version is only used by a trained Caterpillar technician to determine that the latest available software has been up loaded. This feature is not needed for normal system operation.

Aftertreatment Hour Meter

The aftertreatment system is equipped with an hour meter unique from the engine hour meter. The hour meter tracks the number of hours of operation of the aftertreatment system once the engine speed exceeds 200 rpm. It is expected that the aftertreatment service meter will not match the engine service meter primarily due to the time spent at low idle which accumulates on the engine hour meter but not on the aftertreatment hour meter.
