Stronger Water Cooled Exhaust Manifold Used

Usage:

3406, 3406B Industrial, Marine And Generator Set Engines

Description of Change: A new water cooled exhaust manifold is used on the above engines. The mounting flanges on the new manifold have a stronger construction which will help prevent cracks in the weld between the manifold and the flange.

Adaptable To: The new 2W8836 Manifold Assembly is a direct replacement for the former 4N960 Manifold Assembly, which is canceled.

If desired, reinforcements can be added to the former 4N960 Manifold Assembly to make it stronger. Use the procedure that follows to fabricate and install the reinforcements:

1. If necessary, make repairs to any cracked welds between the manifold and flange near the Number 6 exhaust port. The size of the original weld is a 3 mm (.12") fillet weld.
2. Use low carbon steel to fabricate a stiffener rod and bar to the dimensions shown in Illustrations 1 and 2 respectively.

Illustration 2. Dimensions for fabrication of stiffener bar.

3. Weld the rod and bar in position on the exhaust manifold as shown in Illustration 3.
