Dry Exhaust Elbow and Improved Turbocharger Exhaust Seal Help Prevent Exhaust Gas Leakage

Usage:

3508, 3512, 3516 Industrial, Marine And Generator Set Engines

Description of Change: A different type connection is used between the turbochargers and the exhaust elbow on the above engines which have water cooled turbochargers and exhaust elbows. Couplings with metal ring seals are used as a replacement for the former metal fiber seals and clamps. A new dry exhaust elbow is used as a replacement for the former water cooled exhaust elbow to give the necessary clearance for the new couplings. A cup type plug is now used in the turbocharger water lines group. The plug is used as a cover for the water supply hole for the former water cooled exhaust elbow.

Adaptable To: All the above engines when the new parts shown in the chart are used together. See the illustration for the location of the new parts. See the chart for the in effect numbers. In effect numbers for the other engine models are not available at this time.

Use the procedure that follows for installation of the new parts:

1. Install the 3S8313 Plug in the center of the 7N7128 Housing.

2. Install the ring expander in the seal groove in the coupling.

3. Put the four rings around the ring expander in the groove. Install the metal rings with the opening in the rings 90° apart ring to ring.

4. Install the couplings in the new exhaust elbow.

5. Slide the adapters over the couplings.

6. Install elbow, couplings and adapters on the engine.

7. Install the new gaskets between the adapters and turbochargers. Put the bolts that fasten the adapters to the turbochargers in position, but do not tighten them.

8. Loosen the bolts that fasten the support bracket for the exhaust elbow to the flywheel housing.

9. Check to make sure all the metal seal rings are completely installed in the bores in the elbow and the adapters. Make sure the seal rings are not on the chamfer in the bores.

10. Shake (move) the elbow to make sure the couplings and seal rings are free.

11. Put the exhaust elbow in alignment with the turbochargers.

12. Lightly tighten the bolts in the order that follows:

a. Exhaust elbow to support bracket bolts (A).

b. Exhaust elbow support bracket to flywheel housing bolts (B).

c. S1594 Bolts that fasten the adapter to the turbocharger.

13. Hit the adapters lightly with a plastic hammer and check the alignment of the parts again.

14. Tighten all bolts to the correct specification.

15. Fill the cooling system.

16. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust elbow.
