C8.7 Marine Engines Caterpillar

Supercharger - Inspect

Usage:

C8.7 CS7

------ WARNING! ------

Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.

----------------------

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Introduction

Use this procedure to inspect the supercharger.

Before you begin inspection of the supercharger, be sure that the inlet air restriction is within the specifications for your engine. Be sure that the exhaust system restriction is within the specifications for your engine. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Air Inlet and Exhaust System - Inspect".

  1. Remove the outlet and air inlet piping from the compressor. Visually inspect the piping for the presence of oil. Clean the interior of the pipes in order to prevent dirt from entering during reassembly.

  1. Turn the supercharger pulley by hand. The assembly should turn freely.

  1. Inspect the compressor wheel for contact with the housing. There should not be any visible signs of contact between the compressor wheel housing. If there is any indication of contact between the rotating compressor wheel and the housing, the compressor must be reconditioned.

  1. Check the compressor wheel and pulley for cleanliness. If only the blade side of the wheel is dirty, dirt and/or moisture is passing through the air filtering system. If oil is found only on the back side of the wheel or pulley, there is a possibility of a failed compressor oil seal.

The presence of oil may be the result of extended engine operation at low idle.

  1. Inspect the bore of the compressor housing for corrosion.

  1. Inspect the pulley for damage or excessive oil. If the pulley is damaged, replace the pulley. If the pulley has excessive oil, replace the supercharger.

  1. Clean the compressor housing with standard shop solvents and a soft bristle brush.

  1. Fasten the air inlet piping to the compressor housing.
