Installing the ECM Software on Certain C3.4B Engines{1901, 1920} Caterpillar

Introduction

The problem below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The procedure for installing the Electronic Control Module (ECM) flash file detailed in Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM" and Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming" will not work when programming a blank ECM.

Solution

Use the following procedure to install the ECM software on a blank ECM:

1. Download the flash file that is to be installed.

2. Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector. If necessary, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools".

3. Navigate to the following menu options in the electronic service tool:
   • Utilities

   • ECM Flash

4. Click on "Select File" on the bottom left of the screen. Navigate to the location of the flash file to be installed. Once the flash file has been selected, the flash file information will be displayed.

5. Click on "Start Download" to begin the installation process.
