PWA rotor position sensor (RPS)

This rotor position sensor (RPS) assembly generates the rotor speed feedback. The rotor speed feedback is used by the system controller to derive the gating signals for the flywheel inverter modules. The RPS assembly consists of the RPS PWA and an RPS optical speed sensor. The RPS PWA is mounted on the lower bearing. The RPS optical speed sensor is on the internal lower bearing cartridge.

PWA Removal

An electrical static discharge (ESD) strap is required when handling the RPS assembly.

  1. Refer to Systems Operation, Test and Adjust, UENR4695, "Internal Component Pre-Removal Steps (FPU)". Perform the internal component pre-removal procedure to shut down the system and to gain access to internal components.

Note: The flywheel cabinet must be de-energized before removal steps can be performed.

Note: Flywheel must be at zero RPM before removal of the RPS assembly.

  2. Remove bottom safety cover from the flywheel assembly.

  3. Disconnect J1 and J2.

  4. Remove the two 7/64 inch hex screws that connect the RPS PWA to lower bearing cartridge.

  5. Remove the board.

PWA Installation

  1. Connect RPS PWA to lower bearing cartridge using two the 7/64 inch hex screws.

  2. Connect J1 and J2.

  3. Install the bottom safety cover of the flywheel assembly.

  4. Perform an RPS calibration. Refer to "RPS Calibration".

Note: The RPS calibration must be performed anytime the RPS sensor is removed.

RPS Calibration

Note: Calibration of the system and system components is done at the factory prior to shipping.

Note: Calibrations do not need to be reset.

IMPORTANT: Check all calibrations to ensure that they are set before operating your UPS.

  1. Verify that the flywheel is at 0 rpm.

  2. Verify that the UPS is in "Bypass" mode.

  3. Enter service level password.

  4. Under the "Calibrate" menu, select "CALIBRATION GROUP 1: RPS CALIBRATION: RPS ADVANCED". The flywheel will enter rough calibration. When the "Finished RPS Advance Rough Calibration" message appears, place the UPS in "Online" mode. When on "Standby", the UPS starts "RPS Advanced Fine Calibration".

  5. Wait for the advanced calibration to be complete.
