Surge Traps

Surge traps

A surge trap is located on the front panel of the SIO cabinet, in the middle of the cabinet. The surge trap is connected to the 3-phase input power from the SIO. The surge trap monitors the incoming voltage for spikes. When a spike is detected, resistance in the surge trap is overcome and the extra voltage is diverted ground. There are three light emitting diodes on the front of each surge trap, one for each phase. Each LED indicates proper operation of the traps.

NOTICE

If the surge trap fails, do not restart the machine. Contact your technical communicator.

Removal

The system must be de-energized before removal steps can be performed.

  1. Refer to Systems Operation, Test and Adjust, UENR4695, "Internal Component Pre-Removal Steps". Perform the internal component pre-removal procedure to shut down the system and to gain access to internal components.

  2. Disconnect wires L1, L2, L3, and neutral. The wires are connected from the back of the surge protector to the input bus.

  3. Remove the two screws that secure the surge protector bracket to the SIO cabinet.

  4. Unscrew the large nut that attaches the MOV to the bracket.

  5. Remove the surge traps from the bracket.

Installation

  1. Route the four wires, L1, L2, L3, and neutral from the back of surge trap through the bracket.

  2. Install the MOV to bracket with the large nut.

  3. Attach the bracket to the SIO cabinet with two screws.

  4. Connect L1, L2, L3, and neutral to the input bus.
