NOTICE

DO NOT change the voltage of the vacuum pump from 230 VAC.

The vacuum pump is located on the right of the flywheel cabinet. The vacuum pump is used to create a vacuum in the flywheel assembly. The vacuum reduces or eliminates friction from air resistance. The reduced air resistance allows the flywheel to spin easier. Reduced air resistance decreases the energy loss due to air friction.

The pump draws air from the top of the flywheel housing and is exhausted out the bottom of the flywheel cabinet.

When the vacuum goes above a minimum allowable pressure, a green notice will be recorded in the log file. There is oil in the vacuum pump that used to help produce vacuum and lubricate the pump mechanism. The oil in the vacuum pump should be changed once a year. Oil is removed via the front drain. The vacuum pump runs off 230 VAC from the output of the UPS.

Removal

  1. Refer to Systems Operation, Test and Adjust, UENR4695, "Internal Component Pre-Removal Steps". Perform the internal component pre-removal procedure to shut down the system and to gain access to internal components.

Note: The flywheel cabinet must be de-energized before removal steps can be performed.

  2. Turn off power to the vacuum pump by switching the power switch on the left side of the pump to the OFF position.

  3. Unplug the power connector located on the side of the pump.

  4. Remove the intake and exhaust vacuum tubes that are connected to the top of the pump.

  5. Remove the four nuts and bolts that connect the pump to the frame of the flywheel cabinet.

  6. Remove the pump.

Installation

  1. Verify that the power switch is set to the OFF position. The power switch is located on the left side of the pump near the back.

  2. Attach the four nuts and bolts that hold the pump to the frame of the cabinet.

  3. Clean and grease the intake and exhaust connector O-rings.

  4. Attach the intake and exhaust vacuum tubes to the top of the pump.

  5. Plug the Power Connector to the right side of the pump.

  6. Fill the new pump with recommended pump oil. The quantity of oil that is required is 0.5 L (0.53 qt).

  7. Turn power on to the pump by setting the switch on the left side of the pump to ON.
