XQC1600 Power Module Caterpillar

Starting the Engine

Usage:

XQC1600 ME2

------ WARNING! ------

Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

------ WARNING! ------

When the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode, the engine can start at any moment. To avoid personal injury, always remain clear of the the engine when the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode.

Before manually starting the engine, perform all of the procedures that are described in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Before Starting Engine". Ensure that no one will be endangered before the engine is started and when the engine is started.

NOTICE

Do not engage the starting motor when flywheel is turning. Do not start the engine under load.

If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motor to cool before attempting to start the engine again.

NOTICE

For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, and for start-up of an engine that has been serviced, make provision to shut the engine off should an overspeed occur. This may be accomplished by shutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine.

Note: The AGC is the primary means of starting and operating the unit, not the EMCP. If started via the EMCP, the variable frequency drive (VFD) will not run in Remote/Auto mode. The VFD must be turned ON in local mode to operate the cooling fans if the unit is started via EMCP.

  1. Start the engine by one of these three methods.

    • The operator presses the "RUN" Key.

    • The control is in "AUTO" and the remote initiate contact (IC) becomes active.

    • The operator presses the "AUTO" Key and a start command is sent via the RS-485 SCADA Data Link.

  2. The ECM checks the system prior to start of the crank cycle. The ECM checks that no system faults are present. The ECM checks that all previous shutdown faults have been reset. The ECM also checks that the engine is not already running. If the engine is equipped with prelube, the ECM checks the status of the prelube. If the prelube is not complete, the ECM will not crank the engine.

  3. The ECM begins the crank cycle.

  4. The ECM cranks the engine until the crank cycle time reaches the setpoint for total crank time or until the engine starts.

  5. The ECM deactivates the starting motor relay (SMR) when the engine speed reaches the setpoint for crank terminate speed.

Idle/Rated Operation

(1) "Idle/Rated" Switch (IRS) location

The "Idle/Rated" switch (inside the control panel) enables engine idle running mode. If the switch is set to the idle position, then the engine will run at a reduced speed and the generator breaker will not close. Idle running mode allows the engine to warm up at reduced speed. Idle running mode can also be used to spin-dry the generator if heaters have not been energized for a long time prior to startup. If the switch is set to the rated position, then the engine will run at the rated speed.
