  1. Identify valve lifters (6) so that the valve lifters can be installed in the same position.

  2. Use a soft faced hammer to remove valve lifters (6) and unit injector lifter (8) from guide (5).

    NOTICE

Valve lifter guide springs may be installed on valve lifters only once. If a valve lifter guide spring is removed from a valve lifter, the guide spring must be replaced with a new guide spring. If the guide spring is not removed from the valve lifter after the lifter is removed from the valve lifter guide, the valve lifter can be installed in the original location without having to replace the valve lifter guide spring.

Note: Inspect guide springs (3) and (4) for wear or damage.

  3. Remove O-ring seals (1) and inserts (2) from the upper end of valve lifters (6) and unit injector lifter (8).

  4. Inspect the valve lifter bores in guide (5) for roughness or wear. The diameter of the valve lifter bores is 42.00 ± 0.02 mm (1.654 ± 0.001 inch). The diameter of the unit injector lifter bore is 56.00 ± 0.02 mm (2.205 ± 0.001 inch).

  5. Be sure that the lubrication passages in the guide for the valve lifters are not obstructed.

  6. Inspect each lifter body for roughness or wear. The diameter of valve lifters (6) is 41.91 ± 0.010 mm (1.650 ± 0.0004 inch). The diameter of unit injector lifter (8) is 55.90 ± 0.010 mm (2.201 ± 0.0004 inch).

  7. Inspect rollers (7) for wear or damage and looseness on valve lifters (6). Inspect roller (9) for wear or damage and looseness on unit injector lifter (8).

  8. Be sure that the lubrication passages in unit injector lifter (8) are not obstructed.
