Guidelines for Servicing Flexible Couplings on Certain C175-16 Locomotive and Petroleum Engines{3252}

Usage:

C175-16 P6L
Engine:
C175-16 (S/N: P6L1-UP; R1X1-UP)

Introduction

This Special Instruction provides the Disassembly and Assembly, the Inspection, and the Troubleshooting needed for servicing the flexible couplings for the above C175-16 Locomotive and Petroleum Engines.

Note: Do not damage the coupling with tools (wrench, hammer, etc.) during assembly and installation. Do not step on the coupling.

Note: Any impacts to the surface of the coupling can lead to damages of the fiber reinforced plastic. These impacts are not necessarily visible from the outside. These impacts may reduce the service life of the coupling.

Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly of the 329-0236 Flexible Coupling Gp , 350-7171 Flexible Coupling Gp , 350-7182 Flexible Coupling Gp , and 396-3847 Flexible Coupling Gp .

  1. Remove the flexible coupling gp guards.

  1. Disconnect the generator from the flexible coupling gp.

  1. Using a suitable lifting device, remove the generator from the engine. The generator weighs approximately 6804 kg (15000 lb).

Note: Always refer to the manufacture's identification plate on the generator for the correct weight.

  1. Measure radial bearing clearance (D) and axial bearing clearance (E). Refer to Table 3 for the correct bearing clearance.

Note: Axial bearing clearance (E) is the total back and forth movement of inner star flange (3).

    Table 3
Bearing Condition     Radial Bearing Diameter Clearance     Axial Bearing Total Clearance
    New
    0.11 mm (0.004 inch) to
    0.27 mm (0.011 inch)

    0.3 mm (0.012 inch) to
    0.4 mm (0.016 inch)
    Used     Max.
    0.54 mm (0.021 inch)
    Max.
    0.8 mm (0.032 inch)

Troubleshooting

Mechanical damage to the coupling can be caused by the following:

  • Impact from heavy objects like tools and so on

  • Overload of the coupling

  • Other unknown sources

Due to the smaller wall thickness and the higher stress level compared to the conical shaft region, damages on the membrane are more critical for the structural integrity of the coupling than damages on the conical shaft.

Table 4
Inspected Condition     Corrective Measure
O-rings sweat during operation.
Oil traces are present radially on the flange and side plate.
No drips are formed.
No effect on the function of the coupling.
No repair required.
O-rings leaking.
Drips are formed.
Remove and dismantle coupling.
Replace O-rings.
Check lead-in grooves and replace worn parts, if applicable.
Traces of oil in a radial position on the flange or side plate.
Main bolts (4) leaking.
Loosen leaking main bolts, reseal the bolts and tighten.
Traces of oil in a radial position on the side plate.
Bolts (if venting screw present) leaking.
Loosen leaking bolts.
Reseal the bolts and tighten.
Wear at the middle blades greater than the permissible wear dimension (A).     Replace the spring pack assembly (18) (by customer service or a customer service location.)
Wear or deformation of the bronze shims (31) in the case of multiple blades.     No influence on the function of the coupling.
First exchanged when the spring packs (18) were completely replaced.
Wear at the groove flanks greater than the permissible wear dimension (C).     Replace inner star flange (3) or rework groove flank.
Clarify with customer service or a customer service location.
Signs of wear on the outer diameter of inner star flange (3) in the area of intermediate pieces (29), outer coupling flange (15), or flywheel (1).     Check alignment of shaft and correct. Replace damaged parts, if necessary. (Clarify with customer service or a customer service location.)
Bearing play more than permissible.
See the inspection section for permissible values.
Repair or replace worn parts.
Signs of abrasion marks (fretting) on the running surfaces of bearings.     Replace damaged/worn parts. Contact customer service or a customer service location.
Signs of oil carbon deposits near the spring chambers     No appreciable impairment of the coupling functions.
The quality of the oil does not match the specification by the engine manufacturer or higher water content in the engine oil than permitted by the engine manufacturer. No damage to engine bearings.     Remove venting screws (if present). Drain coupling completely. Vent coupling and supply fresh oil with a pre-lubrication pump (engine or gear circuit) until oil escapes from the venting hole.
The quality of the oil does not match the specification by the engine manufacturer or higher water content in the engine oil than permitted by the engine manufacturer. Bearing positions in engine already damaged as a result of this.     Remove flexible coupling gp (2) and perform a full inspection.
Parallel fiber cracks in the Epoxi resin matrix.     Normally not critical and do not affect the structural integrity of the coupling No influence to the function of the coupling Coupling repair is not required
Visible fiber failures or other heavy damages like delaminations (separation of the single layers of the composite).     Reduce the driving torque to a minimum during service. Run the engine in emergency service only.
Note: Do not repair the reinforced plastic components
Dismantle coupling and send the coupling back to customer service location.
Audible cracking noise during slow rotation.     Reduce the driving torque to a minimum during service. Run the engine in emergency service only.
Note: Do not repair the reinforced plastic components.
Dismantle coupling and send the coupling back to customer service location.
Not clear if the damage is critical or not.     Take a photo, document kind and extent of the damage, and contact customer service for judgment.
Damages of the paint (if present).     Does not affect to the operational safety and the service life.

Note: If other damage or wear to the product is identified but not described in this table, contact customer service or a customer service location.
