ECM Memory - Test

Usage:

C1.5 G9N
System Operation Description:

This procedure covers the following diagnostic codes:

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Code for the ECM Memory
J1939 Code  Description  Notes
2840-11  ECU Instance : Other Failure Mode  There is an error in the ECM internal memory.
The keyswitch is ON for at least 2 seconds.
The battery voltage is at least 10 VDC.

The warning lamp will flash. The shutdown lamp will come on.
The engine will shut down.
2840-12  ECU Instance : Failure
2840-13  ECU Instance : Out of Calibration

Test Step 1. Check for Active or Recently Logged Diagnostic Codes

  1. Connect the electronic service tool to the diagnostic connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools".

  2. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. If the engine will start, then run the engine.

  3. Monitor the electronic service tool for active and/or recently logged diagnostic codes.

  4. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Expected Result:

One of the diagnostic codes that are listed in Table 1 is active or recently logged.

Results:

  • One of the preceding diagnostic codes is active or recently logged -

Repair: Make a note of all other active or recently logged diagnostic codes. Troubleshoot all other codes before continuing this procedure. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Diagnostic Trouble Codes".

    Proceed to Test Step 2.

Test Step 2. Clear the Diagnostic Code and Attempt to Start the Engine

  1. Use the electronic service tool to clear the 2840 diagnostic code.

  2. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. If the engine will start, then run the engine for at least 10 minutes.

  3. Operate the engine over the full duty cycle in order to replicate the conditions in which the fault occurred.

  4. Stop the engine. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.

  5. Use the electronic service tool to check for an active or recently logged 2840 diagnostic code.

Results:

  • The 2840 diagnostic code is no longer active - STOP

  • The 2840 diagnostic code is active - Proceed to Test Step 3.

Test Step 3. Re-Flash the ECM

  1. Ensure that the latest software is installed on the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Flash Programming".

  2. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.

  3. Use the electronic service tool to check for an active 2840 diagnostic code.

  4. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

Results:

  • OK - The 2840 diagnostic code is no longer active.

Repair: Use the electronic service tool to clear all logged diagnostic codes.

    STOP

  • Not OK - The 2840 diagnostic code is still active Proceed to Test Step 4.

Test Step 4. Check if a Replacement ECM Eliminates the Fault

  1. Contact the Technical Communicator at a Caterpillar dealer.

Note: This consultation can greatly reduce the repair time.

  2. If the Technical Communicator recommends the use of a replacement ECM, install a replacement ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".

  3. Use the electronic service tool to recheck the system for active diagnostic codes.

Results:

  • OK - The fault is resolved with the replacement ECM

Repair: Reconnect the suspect ECM. If the fault returns with the suspect ECM, replace the ECM.

Use the electronic service tool in order to clear all logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repair eliminates the fault.

    STOP

  • Not OK - The fault is still present with the replacement ECM.

Repair: Contact the Technical Communicator at a Caterpillar Dealer.

    STOP
