Usage:
3208 Truck Engines
Description of Change: The aluminum flywheel housing on 3208 Truck Engines has been changed from a sand casting to a die casting. The new casting weighs less through the use of external strengthening ribs. No gasket is used next to the engine block. A thin coat of sealant is used in place of the gasket to cover minor scratches and any surface imperfections.
Adaptable To: The new housing can be installed on earlier models in the chart that are equipped with any of the listed former flywheel housing groups. The complete group must be installed. Note that the group is not serviced. The new housing is easily identified by the external ribs and the words "Do Not Use Gasket" on the housing. The former flywheel housings are still serviced.
Tighten the plug to 5 ± 2 N·m (50 ± 20 in lb). Never use a gasket with the new housing, regardless of whether it is being reinstalled or as a replacement for the former housing. Do the following whenever the new housing is installed:
- ...Clean the flange surface on both the block and housing.
- ...Put on a thin continuous bead of 6V6640 Sealant on only one flange and around each bolt hole.
- ...Install the housing as usual and wipe off any excess sealant.
- ...Put on a thin continuous bead of 6V6640 Sealant on only one flange and around each bolt hole.
NOTE: If the temperature is below 10 °C 50°F), spray 6V1541 Quick Primer on the surface where the sealant is to be applied.
