Alternator - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

------ WARNING! ------

Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.


  1. If equipped with a 437-0125 (24 Volt) alternator, refer to Special Instruction, "Procedure to Install the 437-0125 Charging Alternator Gp On Certain Off-Highway Truck Engines" for additional instruction.

  2. Turn the power disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  3. Remove clips (1). Remove guard (2) and guard (3).

  4. Remove belt (4). Disconnect cable assemblies (5).

  5. Remove bolts (6), guard assembly (7), bolts (8), and alternator (9).

    1. If equipped with a 24 Volt alternator, us the following steps.

    2. Turn the power disconnect switch to the OFF position.

    3. Disconnect clips (1). Disconnect cable assemblies (2).

    4. Remove guard assembly (3).

    5. Remove belt (4).

    6. Remove bolts (5) and belt tightener support (6).

    7. Remove bolts (7) and alternator (8). The weight of alternator (8) is approximately 21 kg (47 lb).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install alternator (9) or alternator (8) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. If installing the 24 Volt alternator (8), the belt pulley must be aligned. Refer to Special Instruction , REHS9242 , "Installing a New Alternator Group on Certain Low Altitude 793D Off-Highway Truck Engines" for instruction to align the belt pulley using a Dayco Belt Diagnostic Kit 93874.
