An "Unexpected Engine Shutdown" is Occurring{1251, 1716}

Usage:

C3.3 N3C
Engine:
C3.3 (S/N: X3B1-UP; NCC1-UP; N3C1-UP; N3X1-UP)
C4.4 (S/N: XYC1-UP; NCD1-UP; N4D1-UP; XYD1-UP; NCE1-UP; N4E1-UP; N4R1-UP; N4X1-UP)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The generator set engines that are listed above may receive an "Unexpected Engine Shutdown". The fault code is 1383-11.

When the run signal is applied to the generator set the following actions occur:

  • The engine will crank and the engine will start.

  • The engine will run momentarily and the engine will shut down.

  • The EMCP3 displays the 1383-11 fault code.

  • No other alarms or fault codes are generated.

The default settings for the 272-2223 Governor Actuator Gp may trigger a command for "zero" fuel. After the command is issued, the EMCP3 determines that the initial rpm reading is excessive. The EMCP3 issues the "Unexpected Engine Shutdown" and the 1383-11 fault code is generated.

Note: This problem occurs more frequently in engines that are used for standby operations because these engines sit without being run for extended periods.

Solution

The default settings that are set in the 272-2223 Governor Actuator Gp need to be modified. Modify the following values in order to resolve the problem:

  • "Acceleration Ramp Rate:"

  • "Overspeed Threshold:"

Perform the following steps in order to modify the values:

  1. Attach the 262-8392 Wiring Harness to the governor.

  1. Connect the software to the governor.

  1. Select "File".

  1. Select the "Control" tab.

  1. Increase the "Overspeed Threshold:" from the default value of 2000 rpm to a new value of 2300 rpm. This field is in the "Error Detection" section of the window.
