后冷器位于发动机的顶部。 后冷器有一个两级式芯组件。 水套水回路的冷却液流经后冷器芯的第一级 (1) 。 分开回路的冷却液流经后冷器芯的第二级 (2) 。
注: 对于某些热电联合发生的发动机来说，后冷器第一级可能也是单独的。
涡轮增压器压缩机的空气/燃料混合气通过节流阀流到后冷器盖。 空气/燃料混合气穿过后冷器芯片，以便与冷却液交换热量。 压缩的空气 / 燃油混合气温度在后冷器中会降低。 这样会增加空气 / 燃油混合气的密度。 从而使燃烧更有效。
空气/燃料混合气的温度在第一级开始降低。 第二级进一步降低空气/燃料混合气的温度。 后冷器的空气/燃料混合气通过空气进气歧管被分配到各气缸中供燃烧。
