Emulsion Has Been Found in Certain Applications{1107, 1306, 1317, 1326}

Usage:

C7 C7S
On-highway Engine:
C13 (S/N: LEE1-UP)
C15 (S/N: SDP1-UP)
C7 (S/N: C7S1-UP)
C9 (S/N: C9S1-UP)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

This document addresses questions regarding emulsion that has been found in the above listed engines. This mixture of oil and water occurs when condensation forms in the engine during certain operating and seasonal conditions. The emulsion may appear thicker than oil. Also, the emulsion may appear lighter in color. Emulsion may be found in the following areas.

  • Engine oil filler

  • Engine oil level gauge

  • Valve covers

  • Crankcase ventilation system

Solution

The emulsion should disappear with increased engine temperatures at higher load conditions. Test results have shown emulsion to have no negative effect on life of the oil or bearing wear.

If emulsion does not disappear with increased engine temperatures at higher load conditions, then this may indicate an overcooling condition. Reference the Troubleshooting Guide for cooling system inspection and repair procedures.
