Start By:
- Separate the transmission from the torque converter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission and Torque Converter - Separate".
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before you begin the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the components should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Precision components can be damaged by contaminants or by dirt. Perform disassembly procedures on a clean work surface. Keep components covered and protected at all times.
Lubricate the seals with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Note: Note the orientation of all components for assembly purposes.

NOTICE |
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

- Remove the gasket from the housing. Remove bearing (1) and seal rings (2) .

- Position shaft assembly (10) in a suitable press. Use Tooling (B) and the suitable press in order to compress retainer (12) and spring (13). Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (11) .
- Release the tension. Remove retainer (12) and spring (13) .

- Attach Tooling (H) and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (75). The weight of housing assembly (75) is approximately 43 kg (95 lb). Remove bolts (74) and housing assembly (75) .

- Drive pin (89) into shaft assembly (88). Remove shaft assembly (88), pin (89), gear (92), thrust discs (90), and bearing (91). Repeat for the remaining planetary gears.
- Remove shaft (87). Remove bearing (93) from shaft (87) .
- Remove bearing cone (86) from planetary assembly (84). Remove bearing cone (85) (not shown) from housing assembly (75) .
