Variable Gauge Undercarriage and the Determination of Caterpillar Warranty Eligibility {4150}

Usage:

OEMS DSL
OEM Solutions:
UNDERCARRIAGE (S/N: GSC1-UP; L5E1-UP; DSL1-UP; L3M1-UP)

The Caterpillar OEM Solutions Group offers both a standard gauge and a variable gauge undercarriage to original equipment manufacturers (OEM). The variable gauge undercarriage contains components that are not Caterpillar parts. The Caterpillar name is not on the undercarriage.

Caterpillar dealers have not known that these variable gauge undercarriages were sold by Caterpillar. Also, Caterpillar dealers may not known that these variable gauge undercarriages were supported by Caterpillar. As a result, Caterpillar dealers may have missed the opportunity to service the undercarriages.

Notification

When a variable gauge undercarriage is sold, Caterpillar is notified through a web registration process. The Caterpillar dealer is notified with a letter. The letter allows the dealer to know that the undercarriage is in the dealer territory.

Identification of Caterpillar Supported Undercarriages

Each variable gauge undercarriage is tagged with a unique Caterpillar serial number plate. The plate signifies that the undercarriage is supported by Caterpillar. The Caterpillar dealer should use the serial number to submit service reports and service claims to Caterpillar via the Service Information Management System (SIMS). The arrangement number on the plate can be used to identify the bill of material.

One serial number plate (1) existed on the previous undercarriages. The location of the serial number plate was on the right side track near the idler.

Illustration 2g01323916

Effective with May 2006 five serial number plates are attached to the undercarriage.

  1. The location of the first serial number plate (2) is on the right side. The serial number plate is located next to the opening that is used for tensioning the track.

  1. The second location of the serial number plate (2) is on the left side. The serial number plate is located next to the opening that is used for tensioning the track.

  1. The third location of the serial number plate (3) is on the right side of the travel drive assembly.

  1. The fourth location of the serial number plate (3) is on the left side of the travel drive assembly.

  1. The fifth location of the serial number plate is at the front end and the center of the carbody assembly.

Warranty Coverage

Standard OEM Solutions Group warranty coverage applies. The Caterpillar dealer will be reimbursed for the warranty work. Profit is allowed by the Caterpillar dealer for both parts and labor. Parts are reimbursed at the consumer list price. Labor is paid at the dealer's rate. The dealer is reimbursed for travel and mileage at the dealer's rate. Specific information on filing warranty claims is listed in Table 1.
