992K Wheel Loader and 854K Wheel Dozer Steering System Caterpillar

Relief Valve (Pump Backup) - Test and Adjust

Usage:

992K 880

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

------ WARNING! ------

The drive shaft rotates between the torque converter and the transmission whenever the engine is running. Contact with the rotating shaft can result in personal injury or death. The rotating shaft is located under the implement and steering pumps.

Do not allow personnel into the pump bay area behind the cab when the engine is running.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Before you perform this test, release any hydraulic pressure that may be in the steering system. Also, make sure that steering frame lock (1) is installed, as shown.

Reference: For the correct procedure for machine preparation, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release".

  1. Assemble the necessary hoses and the correct pressure gauges to the pressure tap Steering Pump (STR-P).

Note: The relief valve setting is higher than the setting of the pressure compensator. The steering control valve is located in the pump area on the left inner frame.

    (4) Adjustment screw

  2. Loosen locknut (3) and turn adjustment screw (4) counterclockwise by two full turns to reduce the relief valve setting by 10340 kPa (1500 psi). This action will lower the pump relief valve pressure to a level that is below the setting of the pumps pressure compensator. Tighten locknut (3).

  3. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.

Note: Do not keep the STIC steering control lever in the LEFT TURN position or in the RIGHT TURN position for more than 5 seconds while the backup relief valve is at the relief valve setting.

  4. Observe the gauges and move the STIC steering control lever in both directions until the relief valve opens. Note the gauge readings for each direction.

When the adjustment screw is turned counterclockwise by two full turns, the relief valve pressure setting should be lowered to 24160 ± 700 kPa (3500 ± 100 psi).

  5. If the pressure is correct, stop the engine and proceed to Step 6.

If the pressure is not identical for both directions, there is a problem in the shuttle valve. If the pressure is identical for both directions, but the pressure is not correct, use the following procedure to adjust the backup relief valve:

    1. Stop the engine.

    2. Loosen locknut (3). To increase the pressure setting, turn adjustment screw (4) clockwise. To decrease the pressure setting, turn adjustment screw (4) counterclockwise.

    3. After adjustment screw (4) is correctly adjusted, hold adjustment screw in place and tighten locknut (3) to a torque of 50 ± 7 N·m (35 ± 5 lb ft).

    4. Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Repeat Steps 4 and 5.

  6. Set the final pump relief valve pressure by turning adjustment screw (4) clockwise by two full turns. This will increase the main relief valve pressure setting to 10340 kPa (1500 psi). The correct pressure setting of the backup relief valve should now be 34500 ± 700 kPa (5000 ± 100 psi).

  7. Move the steering frame lock to the STORED position.
