Hydraulic Oil Contamination - Test

Usage:

992K 880

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:

Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.

Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.

Stop the engine and remove the key.

Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.

------ WARNING! ------

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

If the oil becomes contaminated, premature component failure could result. Contaminated oil can also contribute to overheating. Use the following procedure to sample the oil in the system.

  1. Start the engine and run the engine at high rpm. Allow the oil temperature to reach the normal operating temperature.

  2. To circulate the oil, move the STIC steering control lever repeatedly through all travel positions and depress the brake pedal repeatedly.

  3. Allow the engine to run at low idle.

Note: Make sure that the STIC steering control lever is in the LOCKED position. Do not operate the STIC steering control lever or the brakes.

View showing the sampling valve for the pilot oil pump.

  4. Drain 50 mL (1.7 fl oz) of oil from the sampling valve on the pilot oil pump in order to clean out the sampling valve. The pilot oil pump is located in the pump compartment behind the cab. The pilot oil pump is attached to the rear of the main steering pump. Properly dispose of the oil.

  5. Draw another 50 mL (1.7 fl oz) of oil from the sampling valve for analysis. The level of contaminants must be lower than the values in the following table.

Note: For additional information about taking a good oil sample, refer to Special Instruction , PEHP6001, "How To Take A Good Oil Sample" for the machine that is being tested.
