Improvements have been made to the software for the Engine and the transmission on 980H Medium Wheel Loaders.

Certain 980H Medium Wheel Loaders need to be updated with the new software for the engine and the transmission.

Engine Software

This new engine software provides additional horsepower when the cooling fan is not at maximum speed and the software corrects an issue of derate at engine start-up.

The updated software is available on the following machines.

• 980H A8J266-UP

• 980H JMS2760-UP

• 980H MHG834-UP

The updated software is adaptable to previous machines.

Update Engine Software

1. If the implement ECM does not have 292-1957 Implement Software Gp or higher Software the implement ECM needs to be updated with 292-1957 Implement Software Gp or higher Software. If the implement ECM has 292-1957 Implement Software Gp or higher Software proceed to Step 2.

   Note: Use the following procedure if an update to the implement software is needed. Copy the configuration of the implement ECM with ECM replacement. Flash the new implement software. Program the saved configuration into the implement ECM. Verify that the implement ECM has been configured properly. Cycle power by using the ignition switch. Perform implement calibrations. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, RENR8678, "Electrohydraulic System". Confirm that all fault codes have been cleared.

2. Flash the engine ECM with 315-4121 Engine Ratings Electronic Software Gp .

Software for the Transmission

The new software for the transmission allows disabling of Soft Shift. This provides optional quicker shift times on second gear to first gear, third gear to second gear, and second gear to third gear.

The updated software is available on the following machines with standard transmissions.

• 980H A8J266-UP

• 980H JMS2760-UP

• 980H MHG834-UP

The updated software is available on the following machines which are configured with a 233-9688 Transmission Ar (Heavy Duty).

• 980H A8J285-UP

• 980H JMS3115-UP

• 980H MHG1013-UP

The updated software is adaptable to previous machines.

Update Software for the Transmission

1. Flash the transmission ECM with 314-8496 Power Train Software Gp .

2. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, RENR8666, "980H Wheel Loader Power Train ", "Engagement Pressure for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate".

3. Perform the Testing and Adjusting, RENR8666, "980H Wheel Loader Power Train ", "Fill Time for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate"

4. Select standard shift times (Soft Shifting) or quicker shifting.

   1. For standard shift times in Soft Shifting, no changes are necessary. The default setting for the "Transmission Soft Shift Enable" function is enabled in the "Transmission ECM Configuration".

   2. For quicker shift times, switch the "Transmission Soft Shift Enable" function to "Disabled" and set the "Variable Shift Control Switch" to the Normal position. Standard shift times (Soft Shifting) are used when the "Variable Shift Control Switch" is set to Intermediate position (middle) or Economy position (right).
