(8) Input transfer gear case
(9) Output gear

Note: End play for input gear (1) and output gear (9) is 0.152 mm (.0060 inch) to a maximum of 0.203 mm (.0080 inch).

Adjustment Procedure for the Input Gear

  1. Install the bearing cups into input transfer gear case (8) and cage assembly (4). Make sure that the bearing cups are fully seated. Install the bearing cones. Make sure that the bearing cones are seated against the shoulders of the gear. Use a 0.038 mm (.0015 inch) shim or a feeler gauge in order to check for a gap.

  2. Position input transfer gear case (8) horizontally with the opening for cage assembly (4) at the top. Place input gear (1) in input transfer gear case (8). Place cage assembly (4) on input transfer gear case (8).

  3. Insert two dowels at 180 degree intervals from each other in input transfer gear case (8).

  4. Assemble cage assembly (4) to input transfer gear case (8) with shim pack (2). Install bolts (3) and tighten bolts (3) to the proper torque.

Note: Make sure that cage assembly (4) does not bind in input transfer gear case (8).

  5. Rotate the shaft for input gear (1) until the rolling resistance diminishes to a steady level. Tap the shaft for input gear (1) lightly as you rotate the shaft. This will help the bearings in the assembly to seat.

  6. Use a dial indicator to measure the end play of the shaft. Lift up on the shaft in order to measure the end play.

  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6. Adjust shim pack (2) in order to obtain a shaft end play that is 0.152 mm (0.0060 inch) to 0.203 mm (0.0080 inch).

  8. Rotate the shaft in order to verify that no bearings are binding.

Adjustment Procedure for the Output Gear

  1. Install the bearing cups into input transfer gear case (8) and bearing cage (5). Make sure that the bearing cups are fully seated. Install the bearing cones. Make sure that the bearing cones are seated against the shoulders of the gear. Use a 0.038 mm (.0015 inch) shim or a feeler gauge in order to check for a gap.

  2. Position input transfer gear case (8) horizontally with the opening for bearing cage (5) at the top. Place output gear (9) in input transfer gear case (8).

  3. Insert two dowels at 180 degrees intervals from each other in input transfer gear case (8).

  4. Assemble cage assembly (5) to input transfer gear case (8) with shim pack (7). Install bolts (6) and tighten bolts (6) to the proper torque.

Note: Make sure that the cage assembly (5) does not bind in input transfer gear case (8).

  5. Rotate the shaft for output gear (9) until the rolling resistance diminishes to a steady level. Tap the shaft for output gear (9) lightly as you rotate the shaft. This will help the bearings in the assembly to seat.

  6. Use a dial indicator to measure the end play of the shaft. Lift up on the gear or the shaft in order to measure the end play.

  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6. Adjust shim pack (2) in order to obtain a shaft end play that is 0.152 mm (0.0060 inch) to 0.203 mm (0.0080 inch).

  8. Rotate the shaft in order to verify that no bearings are binding.
