Warnings

------ WARNING! ------

Do not attempt to assemble this machine until you read and you understand the assembly instructions.

Improper assembly procedures could result in injury or death.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

----------------------

NOTICE

Do not let any dirt or foreign material get into the hydraulic system during assembly or maintenance operations. Keep the oil in the hydraulic system at the correct level to prevent pump cavitation. Clean all surfaces where parts are to be installed.

NOTICE

When a hoist is used to lift any part or assembly, stand clear of the area. Always make sure that the hoist has the correct capacity. Approximate weights of the components are shown in Table 1

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: No oil or lubricant is recommended on new fasteners. When fasteners are reused after being used in the field, the fasteners should be cleaned and lightly oiled before assembly. Instructions are given when lubrication is required.

  1. Connect carriage assembly (33) to frame assembly (26) with pins (23), bolts (25), and locknuts (35). Refer to Illustration 3.

Note: Assemble pin (23) so that the hole will align with the hole on carriage assembly (33) .

  1. Connect carriage assembly (33) to link assemblies (30) with pins (32), bolts (31), and locknuts (24). Refer to Illustration 3.

Note: Assemble pin (32) so that the hole will align with the hole on carriage assembly (33) .

  1. Remove the support from frame assembly (26). Raise or lower the frame assembly and the carriage assembly in order to align the hole in the cylinder rod with the hole in the frame assembly. Connect cylinder (56) to the frame assembly with pin (27), bar (28), bolts (29), and washers (34). Refer to Illustration 3.

  1. Install fitting (21) into pin (27) .

  1. Connect hose assemblies (37) and (38) to the ripper valve with seals (45), eight bolts, eight washers, and four flanges.

Note: Items that are not numbered are part of the valve group.

  1. Clip hoses (37) and (38) together with grommet (52), clips (53) and (54), two bolts (55), two nuts (46), and four washers (51) .

  1. Install two grommets (43) onto both ends of hose assemblies (37) and (38). Install two shields (42) over the grommets and the collet. Tighten the shields to the hoses with two clamps (36). Refer to Detail (D-D) in Illustration 5.

Note: Install the shields so that the shields are flush with the end of the stem assembly. The hole in the top of the shield should be facing upward.

  1. Check all connections for leaks and repair, if necessary.

  1. Check the oil level in the hydraulic tank and fill, if necessary. Cycle the cylinder in both directions in order to purge the air from the cylinder and from the lines. Repeat until all of the air is purged.
