Power train Electronic Control Module (ECM)

(1) Connector J1. (2) Connector J2.

Remove the cover in Illustration 1 in order to gain access to the machine electronic control module (ECM). The machine (ECM) is mounted under the rear of the operator's cab on the left side of the machine.

The main function of the machine ECM is the shifting of the transmission. The operator input is sent to the machine ECM by the transmission direction and speed controls on the steering wheel. The operator input indicates the desired speed for the transmission and the desired direction for the transmission. The machine ECM makes decisions that are based on the input information and on the memory information. After the machine ECM receives the input information, the information is compared to the memory information. The machine ECM sends a corresponding response via the outputs. The inputs and the outputs are connected to the machine harness via two 70-pin connectors.

The machine ECM also controls the backup alarm. The backup alarm is activated whenever the direction control switch is in the reverse position.

The machine ECM has built-in diagnostics in order to detect faults in the transmission system. The diagnostics are displayed on the display screen.

ReferenceFor additional information about the transmission electrical system, refer to the Schematic, "525C / 535C / 545C Wheel Skidder Electrical System Schematic" for the machine that is being serviced.

Inputs

The machine has several input devices. Input devices inform the machine ECM of the operating conditions of the machine. The machine has two types of inputs, switch inputs and sensor inputs. The switch inputs of the machine ECM are provided with the following signals from the switches: an open, a ground and a positive battery source. Sensors provide a constantly changing signal to the machine ECM. Tables 1 and 2 list the inputs to the machine ECM.

Outputs

The machine ECM makes decisions by sending electrical signals through the outputs. The outputs can create an action or the outputs can provide information to the machine ECM. Tables 1 and 2 list the outputs to the machine ECM.

Input/Output

The Cat Data Link is used to communicate with the other electronic control modules on the machine. The Cat Data Link is bidirectional. This allows the machine ECM to receive information and this allows the machine ECM to send information. The Cat Data Link allows the sharing of information with other electronic controls.

  • The machine ECM receives the harness code input from the Monitoring System.

  • The machine ECM sends the following information to the Monitoring System: engine speed, parking brake switch status, transmission speed selection, transmission direction selection, status of the grapple auto/manual switch, status of the transmission filter and diagnostic codes of the transmission.

  • The Instrument Cluster displays this information for the operator or for service personnel.
