Schematic for the Implement Lockout Switch |
This diagnostic code is associated with the implement lockout switch. The FMI 04 means that the ECM has determined that the voltage of the switch circuit is below normal.
This switch has two inputs to the ECM. During normal operation, one input is open and the other input is grounded. This diagnostic code is activated when the status of both inputs are grounded at the same time.
The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
- The switch has failed.
- Either one or both switch inputs are shorted to ground in the machine harness.
- The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.
System Response:
The machine response is listed:
- The implements will not operate.
Table 1 contains wire numbers and connector contacts. Use this information to troubleshoot the failed circuit.
Switch Contact Status     | ||||
Switch State | Implement ECM Connector, Contact Number     | Switch Contact     | Wire No.     | Status     |
Not Locked     | J1-13 (N/O) (1)     | N/O     | E917-WH     | O (2)     |
J1-14 N/C (3) | N/C     | E918-GN     | G (4)     | |
Locked     | J1-13 N/O     | N/O     | E917-WH     | G     |
J1-14 N/C | N/C     | E918-GN     | O     |
( 1 ) | N/O = Normally Open. |
( 2 ) | O = Open (no continuity to ground). |
( 3 ) | N/C = Normally Closed. |
( 4 ) | G = Grounded (continuity to ground). |
Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code is corrected.
Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code is active and that the diagnostic code indicator is active.
Test Step 1. CHECK THE SWITCH
- Turn the key switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the machine harness from the switch.
- At the connector for the switch, measure the resistance from N.O. signal contact 3 to switch common contact 2.
- At the connector for the switch, measure the resistance from N.C signal contact 1 to switch common contact 2.
- Move the switch to the LOCKED position and repeat Steps "C" and "D".
Expected Result:
When the switch is in the UNLOCKED position, the resistance measurement for Step "C" should measure greater than 5000 ohms (open). The resistance measurement for Step "D" should measure less than 5 ohms (continuity).
When the switch is in the LOCKED position, the resistance measurement for Step "C" should measure less than 5 ohms (continuity). The resistance measurement for Step "D" should measure greater than 5000 ohms (open).
Results:
- YES - All of the resistance checks for the switch are correct. The switch is working correctly. Proceed to Test Step 2.
- NO - All of the resistance checks for the switch are NOT correct.
Repair: The switch is faulty. Replace the switch.
Stop.
Test Step 2. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
The key switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position. The machine harness remains disconnected from the switch.
- Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 and J2 from the ECM.
- At the machine harness ECM connector J1, measure the resistance from switch signal contact J1-14 (wire E918-GN) to all ECM ground and frame ground contacts on connectors J1 and J2. The ground contacts on connector J1 are J1-2, J1-5, J1-7, J1-15 and J1-16. The ground contact on connector J2 is J2-3. Repeat this step with switch signal contact J1-13 (wire E917-WH).
Expected Result:
Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.
Results:
- OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
- NOT OK - Each resistance measurement is not greater than 5000 ohms. The short is between the switch signal circuit at contact J1-14 (wire E918-GN) or the switch signal circuit at contact J1-13 (wire E917-WH) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.
Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.
Stop.
Test Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
- Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors that are used in the switch circuit. Ensure that the contacts are secure. Clean all of the contacts in the harness connectors.
- Reconnect all harness connectors.
- Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
- Enter service mode.
- Operate the machine. Determine if the CID 0490 FMI 04 is active.
Expected Result:
The CID 0490 FMI 04 is active.
Results:
- YES - The CID 0490 FMI 04 is active.
Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Refer to the full machine electrical system schematic. Ensure that all connections in the switch circuit are intact, clean and secure. If the cause of this diagnostic code is not found in the machine harness, replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".
Stop.
- NO - The CID 0490 FMI 04 is not active at this time.
Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.
Stop.
