Schematic for the Implement Function Selector Switch

This diagnostic code is associated with the implement selector trigger switch that is located on the joystick. The FMI 03 means that the ECM has determined that the voltage of the switch circuit is above normal.

This switch has two inputs to the ECM. The inputs are normally open and normally closed. The ECM activates this diagnostic code when both switch inputs are showing +battery voltage at the same time. This diagnostic code could also be activated if both inputs are open at the same time. During normal operation, one input is open and the other input is grounded.

The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:

  • The switch has failed.

  • Short to the +battery circuit in the harness.

  • An open in the harness.

  • The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

System Response:

The machine response is listed:

  • The switch will not change the operation of the tilt lever.

Table 1 contains wire numbers and connector contacts. Use this information to troubleshoot the failed circuit.

( 3 ) N/C = Normally Closed
( 4 ) G = ECM Ground ( Continuity).

Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code is corrected.

Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code is active and that the diagnostic code indicator is active.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE SWITCH

  1. Turn the key switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness from the switch.

  1. At the connector for the switch, measure the resistance from N.O. signal contact 1 to switch common contact 2.

  1. At the connector for the switch, measure the resistance from N.C signal contact 3 to switch common contact 2.

  1. Depress and hold the trigger on the joystick and repeat Steps "C" and "D".

Expected Result:

When the joystick trigger is NOT depressed, the resistance measurement for Step "C" should measure greater than 5000 ohms (open). The resistance measurement for Step "D" should measure less than 5 ohms (continuity).

With the joystick trigger depressed, the resistance measurement for Step "C" should measure less than 5 ohms (continuity). The resistance measurement for Step "D" should measure greater than 5000 ohms (open).

Results:

  • YES - All of the resistance checks for the switch are correct. The switch is working correctly. Proceed to Test Step 2.

  • NO - All of the resistance checks for the switch are NOT correct.

Repair: The switch is faulty. Replace the switch.

    Stop.

Test Step 2. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO +BATTERY

The key switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position. The machine harness remains disconnected from the switch.

  1. Disconnect the machine harness connector J1 from the ECM.

  1. At the machine harness ECM connector J1, measure the resistance from switch signal contact J1-24 (wire G944-YL) to all J1 contacts that are connected to +battery. The J1 contacts are: J1-1, J1-6 and J1-40. No J2 contacts are connected to +battery. Repeat this step with switch signal contact J1-23 (wire G943-BU).

Expected Result:

Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.

Results:

  • OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.

  • NOT OK - Each resistance measurement is not greater than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the machine harness. The short is between the switch signal circuit at contact J1-24 (wire G944-YL) or the switch signal circuit at contact J1-23 (wire G943-BU) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement.

Repair: Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 3. CHECK THE SWITCH CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN CIRCUIT

The key switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position. The machine harness remains disconnected from the switch.

  1. At the machine harness connector for the switch, connect a jumper wire between connector contact 1 (wire G944-YL) and connector contact 3 (G943-BU).

  1. At the ECM harness connectors, measure the resistance between connector contact J1-24 (wire G944-YL) and connector contact J1-23 (wire G943-BU).

Expected Result:

The resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less.

Results:

  • YES - The resistance measurement is 5 ohms or less. The switch wiring circuit is not open. Proceed to Test Step 4.

  • NO - The resistance measurement is greater than 5 ohms. There is an open or a bad connection in the switch circuit.

Repair: A resistance measurement that measures more than 5 ohms could indicate a broken wire or could indicate that a connection point in the harness is loose or corroded. Refer to the machine electrical system schematic. Check all connectors in the switch circuit. Ensure that all connections are intact, clean and tight. Recheck the resistance of the circuit. If the resistance is still more than 5 ohms, a wire is most likely open in the harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.

    Stop.

Test Step 4. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE

  1. Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors that are used in the switch circuit. Ensure that the contacts are secure. Clean all of the contacts in the harness connectors.

  1. Reconnect all harness connectors.

  1. Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  1. Enter service mode.

  1. Operate the machine. Determine if the CID 0489 FMI 03 is active.

Expected Result:

The CID 0489 FMI 03 is active.

Results:

  • YES - The CID 0489 FMI 03 is active.

Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Refer to the full machine electrical system schematic. Ensure that all connections in the switch circuit are intact, clean and secure. If the cause of this diagnostic code is not found in the machine harness, replace the ECM. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".

    Stop.

  • NO - The CID 0489 FMI 03 is not active at this time.

Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.

    Stop.
