NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Drain the coolant from the coolant system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

  2. Disconnect elbows (2) and tube assemblies (1).

  3. Disconnect temperature sensor (3).

  4. Disconnect hose assembly (4).

  5. Remove bolts (5) and washers (6).

  6. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to aftercooler cover (7). Remove aftercooler cover (7) with aftercooler core (9) from the aftercooler housing. The weight of aftercooler core (9) and aftercooler cover (7) is approximately 63 kg (139 lb).

  7. Place aftercooler core (9) and aftercooler cover (7) on a table.

  8. Remove bolts (10) and the washers. Remove adapters (8). Remove the O-ring seals from adapters (8).

  9. Remove aftercooler cover (7) and the gaskets from aftercooler core (9).

    ------ WARNING! ------

    Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.

    Spring force will be released when covers are removed.

    Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.


  10. Remove screws (14) and plates (15) from shaft assembly (11).

  11. Remove retaining ring (12) and washer (13).

  12. Remove shaft assembly (11), spring (16), the bushing, and the retaining ring from aftercooler cover (7).

  13. Remove the washers and the lip seals from aftercooler cover (7).

  14. Remove bolts (18) and washers (20) from aftercooler housing (17).

  15. Remove bolts (19) and the washers from side brackets (21). Remove aftercooler housing (17).

  16. Remove bolts (22). Remove aftercooler base (23) and the gasket.
