C13 and C15 On-highway Engines Caterpillar

Fuel Temperature Is High

Usage:

C15 B5R
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the temperature of the fuel. The ECM activates the following code if the appropriate conditions exist:

174-0 High Fuel Temperature Warning - The engine has been running for at least three minutes. Engine speed is greater than 1000 rpm. The temperature of the fuel has exceeded 89 °C (192 °F) for 30 seconds. A snapshot is triggered. The code is logged. Customer passwords are required in order to clear the code. The active code is cleared if the fuel temperature falls below 88 °C (190 °F) for four seconds.

Probable Causes

  • Fuel level

  • Return fuel line

  • Overheated engine

Recommended Actions

Check the Fuel Level

Ensure that the fuel tank contains enough fuel. As the fuel tank level decreases, the fuel temperature generally increases.

Check the Return Fuel Line

A restricted fuel return line may produce very high fuel temperatures. Ensure that the fuel return flow to the fuel tank is not obstructed.

Overheated Engine

An overheated engine can cause the fuel temperature to exceed the trip level.
