Steering Tank Screen - Clean

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove the steering tank filler cap slowly to relieve any steering tank pressure. Remove the filler cap to prevent a vacuum in the steering tank. Install the filler cap after the tank is drained to prevent dirt from entering the system.

    Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.

  1. Remove tank drain plug (2) from the steering tank. Open the drain valve by installing a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple, 88 mm (3.50 inch) long, to open the internal drain valve and drain the oil.

  1. Remove bolts (1) from the steering tank cover and remove the cover.

  1. Clean the debris from the bottom of the steering tank.

  1. Remove four bolts (3), retainer plate (4) and suction screen (5) .

  1. Wash the screen in clean, nonflammable solvent.

  1. Install suction screen (5), retaining plate (4) and mounting bolts (3) .

  1. Clean the steering tank cover in clean, nonflammable solvent. Inspect the cover gasket. If the gasket is damaged, use a new gasket.

  1. Install the steering tank cover and bolts.

  1. Fill the steering tank.

    Reference: For information on lubricants and the refill capacity, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Start and run the engine at low idle. Inspect the steering tank for leaks.

  1. Maintain the low level to the FULL mark in the sight gauge.

  1. Add oil if necessary. Stop the engine.
