Steering System Oil - Change

Usage:

AD45 BKZ
Operate the machine to warm the steering system oil.

The machine must be on level, the parking brake engaged and the engine stopped.

Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


  1. Remove the steering tank filler cap slowly to relieve any steering tank pressure. Remove the filler cap to prevent a vacuum in the steering tank. Install the filler cap after the tank is drained to prevent dirt from entering the system.

    Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.

  1. Remove the tank drain plug from the steering tank. Open the drain valve by installing a 1 inch NPT pipe nipple, 88 mm (3.50 inch) long, to open the internal drain valve and drain the oil. Drain the oil into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the pipe nipple and install the drain plug.

  1. Remove filler cap (1) .

  1. Remove the strainer retaining ring.

  1. Remove the strainer. Wash the cap and strainer in clean, nonflammable solvent.

  1. Inspect the cap seal. Use a new seal if the seal is damaged.

  1. Install the strainer and the retaining ring.

  1. Fill the steering tank.

    Reference: For information on lubricants and the refill capacity, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Install the filler cap.

  1. Start the engine and run at low idle. Check for leaks.

  1. Maintain the oil level to the FULL mark in sight gauge (2) .

  1. Remove the filler cap and add oil, if necessary.
