Start By:
- Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".
- Remove the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".
- Remove the electronic unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electronic Unit Injector - Remove".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

- Drain the coolant from the system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".

- Disconnect harness assembly (1). Lay harness assembly (1) out of the way.

- Remove nuts (2), the bolts, and the washers.
- Remove hose (3) .
- Use Tooling (A) to remove fuel filter (5). Disconnect hose assembly (4). Plug all openings immediately.
- Remove bolt (6), the washer, and the clip.
- Disconnect harness assembly (7) and cut cable straps (8) .

- Remove nut (9), the washer, and the clip.
- Loosen bolt (10) until harness assembly (11) can be disconnected. Disconnect harness assembly (11). Position the harness assembly away from the cylinder head.

- Disconnect fittings (12). Remove bolts (13) and the washers. Remove tube assembly (14) .

- Remove bolts (15) and the washers. Remove water outlet manifold (16) .
- Remove the spacers from the head bolt studs.

Note: Engines that are equipped with a compression brake will have three head bolt studs. The three head bolt studs are installed in place of head bolts. Remove the head bolt studs with the head bolts.
- Remove head bolts (17) and the head bolt studs, if equipped.
- Remove the gasket from cylinder head (18) .

- Attach a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (18). Ensure that all wires, lines, and hoses are free from the cylinder head.
- Carefully remove cylinder head (18) from the cylinder block. The weight of cylinder head (18) is approximately 135 kg (300 lb).
- Remove cylinder head gasket (19) and the O-ring seals from the cylinder block.
