Start By:

  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hood - Remove".

------ WARNING! ------

At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.

Steam can cause personal injury.

Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.


Drain the cooling system coolant into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the cooling system coolant is approximately 132 L (34.9 US gal). Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7244, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

  1. Loosen belt tightener (1).

  2. Move fan drive belts (2) aside.

  3. Release belt tightener (1).

  4. Disconnect water hose (5), (6), and (9).

  5. Disconnect water hose assembly (7).

  6. Remove fan guards (4) and (8).

  7. Remove support (3).

  8. Remove bolts (11).

  9. Remove fan guard (10).

  10. Attach a suitable lifting device to fan (13).

  11. Remove mounting bolts (12) and the washers.

  12. Remove fan (13) with a suitable lifting device. The weight of the fan is approximately 79 kg (175 lb).

  13. Place fan (13) on the sand blast grid.

    Note: If the machine is not equipped with a sand blast grid then cover the radiator cores with a protective covering.

  14. Remove bolts (14).

  15. Slide pulley (15) forward in order to disconnect the tubes.

  16. Disconnect connector (16).

  17. Disconnect tube assemblies (17), (18), and (19).

  18. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to pulley (15).

  19. Remove bolts (20).

  20. Remove pulley (15) and the fan clutch assembly with Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device. The weight of pulley (14) is approximately 68 kg (150 lb).
