Adjustment Procedure for the Pinion Bearing Preload and Backlash

  1. Install the bearings on pinion (2). Install pinion (2) in the carrier.

  1. As required, use shims (10) behind cage (11) to apply enough preload on the pinion bearings. The torque that is then needed to turn pinion (2) is 2.2 ± 0.6 N·m (19.47 ± 5.31 lb in).

Note: Do not install seal (12) in cage (11) until adjustments are made. Turn pinion (2) slowly while the adjustment is made. When you install seal (12), lubricate seal (12) with a thin covering of the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Install the differential assembly in the carrier.

  1. Install the bearing caps and bolts. At this time, do not tighten the bolts to full torque.

  1. Position the carrier so that the centerline for the axles is vertical and the bevel gear teeth are toward the top.

  1. Use a dial indicator to measure the backlash between bevel gear (8) and pinion (2) at four points on bevel gear (8). Find the average backlash. Turn adjustment ring (3) until the average backlash is 0.36 ± 0.13 mm (.014 ± .005 inch).

  1. Use a dial indicator to measure the amount of change in dimension (B). Turn adjustment ring (9) in order to obtain the maximum preload on carrier bearings until dimension (B) has increased 0.18 ± 0.05 mm (.007 ± .002 inch).

  1. After the adjustments have been made, tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 1100 ± 100 N·m (811 ± 74 lb ft).

Adjustment Procedure of the Differential Thrust Stops

Note: To obtain the correct preload (A) between pin (6) and bearing cap (7) of the carrier assembly, use the following procedure.

  1. Install the differential carrier into the axle housing.

  1. Install pin (6) and the cover. Do not install shims (5) at this time.

  1. Tighten bolt (4) evenly until pin (6) is against bearing cap (7) of the carrier assembly. Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between the cover and the axle housing.

  1. Assemble shims in order to achieve the same thickness as the distance that was measured in Step 3 minus 0.05 ± 0.03 mm (.002 ± .001 inch). Install shims (5) between the cover and the axle housing.
