Transmission Oil Filter and Magnetic Screen - Replace/Clean

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Transmission oil filter housing (2) is located on the left side of the transmission. Transmission oil filter housing (2) is located at the left rear of the tractor.

  1. Park the machine on level ground. Apply the parking brake. Lower the bowl.

  2. Clean filter base (1) and transmission oil filter housing (2) .

  3. Remove drain plug (3). Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  4. Remove transmission oil filter housing (2) from filter base (1).

  5. Remove the used filter element and discard the used filter element.

  6. Clean the inside of the transmission oil filter housing (2) with a clean towel.

  7. Insert a new filter element into the transmission oil filter housing (2).

  8. Inspect the O-ring seal in filter base (1). Replace the seal if the seal is damaged.

  9. Install transmission oil filter housing (2) to filter base (1).

  10. Install drain plug (3) in the transmission oil filter housing (2).

The magnetic screen is located below the transmission oil filter. The screen is located at the right front of the transfer gear housing.

  1. Remove two bolts and cover (4) from the transfer gear housing.

  2. Remove magnetic screen (5).

  3. Separate the magnets from the screen. Wash the screen and the magnets in a nonflammable solvent.

    Note: Do not rap the magnets on hard objects. The magnets may be damaged. Replace damaged magnets.

  4. Allow the cleaned parts to dry. Use compressed air pressure in order to speed the drying of the parts.

  5. Clean the magnets with a towel or clean the magnets with a stiff bristle brush.

  6. Install the magnets into the screen.

  7. Install the magnetic screen (5) into the transfer gear housing.

  8. Install the cover (4) and two bolts to the transfer gear housing.

  9. Start the engine. Apply the parking brake.

  10. Run the engine at low idle.

  11. Check the filter for leaks. Check the magnetic screen for leaks.

  12. Shut off the engine.

  13. Check the oil level of the transmission. Some oil may be needed. Add oil if oil is needed.
