Installation Procedure
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
Note: Check the condition of all seals and of all components. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
- Heat the outer bearing race to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F).

- Install the outer race on the pinion shaft, as shown.
- Lower the temperature of bearing (1) .
Illustration 2 | g00461394 |
- Install the bearing in cage (2) .
Note: Make sure that the hole in the bearing is in alignment with the hole that is in the cage as you install the bearing.
- Install the dowel that holds the bearing in position.
- Install a new seal (3) .
- Put clean oil on the seal.
- Install the bearing and cage (4) .
Note: Make sure that the oil groove that is in the cage is down, as shown.

- Heat the inner bearing race (6) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F).
- Install the inner bearing race on the gear and the pinion, as shown.
- Lower the temperature of bearing cup (7) .
Illustration 6 | g00461404 |
- Install the bearing cup into the case that is for the steering clutch so that the cup is flush with the machined surface of the case.
- Put 1P-0808 Multipurpose Grease on the bearing rollers.

- Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the gear and the pinion.
- Install the gear and pinion (8). The weight of the gear and the pinion is 34 kg (75 lb).
- Install one bolt in the steering clutch case. Put a wire around the gear, the pinion and the bolt.
Note: The wire will hold the gear and the pinion in position during installation of the gear and the hub.
- Remove the hoist.
- Put the gear on hub (9) .
- Install the eighteen bolts, nuts and locks.
- Heat the bearing that is for the gear and hub (9) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F).
- Install the bearing on hub (9) .
- Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the gear and hub (9) .
Illustration 8 | g00461406 |
- Position the gear and hub (9) on the sprocket shaft.
- Remove the wire from the gear and the pinion.
- Remove the bolt from the steering clutch case.
- Put the two bearings in position in the final drive case.
Note: Make sure that the holes that are in the bearings are in alignment with the holes that are in the final drive case.
- Install the dowels that hold the bearings in position. Use a 1/4 inch - 20 NC bolt in order to install the dowels.
- Install the plugs over the dowels.
NOTICE |
---|
Perform scheduled oil sampling on oil wetted compartments in order to check for contaminants left in the system following installation. |
End By:
- Install the final drive cases. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Case - Remove and Install".
- Fill the steering clutch case and the bevel gear case with oil to the correct level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct information.
